Four killed in Jamalpur road crash

Four people were killed and three injured in a road crash between a truck and auto rickshaw on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh regional highway at Sadar upazila of Jamalpur district on Friday afternoon.

The accident happened at Ranagacha Uttarpara area of the upazila around 2.00 pm.

The deceased were identified as Solaiman, 55, Abdul Majid, 48, Joynal Abedin, 42, Sahed Ali, 55, -- all were residents of Kandapara village under Itail union of the upazila.

Quoting locals, police officials said a speeding Mymensingh- bound truck hit a battery-run auto rickshaw from opposite direction, leaving one dead on the spot and six other passengers of the auto rickshaw critically injured.

Jamalpur Sadar Police Station sub-inspector Nijam said, " A passenger of the auto-rickshaw died on the spot being hit by the truck, an injured person succumbed to his injuries in Jamalpur Sadar Hospital and two others breathed their last on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital."

The injured were Hanif, 58, Shafiqul Islam, 55, Khalilur Rahman, 60, -- all are residents of the same area, he said.

Kazi Shahnewaz, officer-in-charge of the police station, confirmed the matter.

"Being informed, police seized the truck from the spot, however, its driver managed to flee from the scene," the OC said.
