Bangladesh Railway (BR) has combined luggage van service with inter-city trains to facilitate the transportation of agricultural products and other goods at low costs.
The first luggage van left Dhaka with Jayantika Express on the Dhaka-Sylhet route on Sunday with 4,600 kilograms of goods.
Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan inaugurated the van on platform no 5 of the Kamalapur Railway Station around 11:30 am.
According to the Railway Operations Division, a plan has been formulated to introduce 125 goods-carrying carriages to the railway. Among them, 75 will be for meter-gauge trains, and 50 for broad-gauge trains. There will be 10 freezer wagons in the broad-gauge category and 16 freezer wagons in the meter-gauge category.
To collect those luggage vans, Bangladesh Railway and China signed two agreements on August 31, 2020. Although the vans were supposed to be delivered within July 2022, all of them have not been supplied yet.
