The Teesta River`s water level is flowing 4 centimeters above the danger mark following days of heavy rainfall and upstream flash floods.
As a result, low-lying areas along the river in Nilphamari have begun to flood, and the Water Development Board has opened all 44 sluice gates of the Teesta Barrage to manage the situation.
Tohidul Islam, Assistant Engineer (Water Branch) of the Dalia Water Development Board, stated that the continuous rain and floods have caused the water level to rise, and water has already started to enter low-lying areas and river shoals.
He cautioned that if the rain continues, the water level could rise further by Thursday evening, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Several low-lying unions in Nilphamari`s Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas are now inundated, leaving residents concerned about potential flooding.
Hafizur Rahman, acting chairman of Purba Chhatnai Union, reported that water has entered Jharsingheshwar, the largest shoal village, and submerged many farmlands, with the situation becoming progressively more severe.
The rising water has also affected the Hatibandha and Kaliganj upazilas in Lalmonirhat, where water has risen to knee-level in river-adjacent shoals and villages. Many residents are moving their livestock and belongings to higher ground.
Amitabh Chowdhury, Executive Engineer of the Dalia Division, explained that while the water level was below the danger mark all day Tuesday, it began to rise on Wednesday morning, reaching 4-7 centimeters above the danger mark.
With the situation worsening, all barrage gates were opened to control the water flow.
