5 Bangladeshis among 9 killed in Kolkata fire: Foreign ministry

Five Bangladeshi nationals were among nine people killed in a devastating hotel fire in Kolkata, West Bengal, early Wednesday (August 19), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Local police have confirmed the identities of five of the dead as Bangladeshi nationals, while the identities of the remaining victims have yet to be confirmed, the ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.

Four of the five confirmed Bangladeshi victims were members of the same family, according to the release.

The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata has already contacted the families of the deceased.

Six other Bangladeshi nationals were injured in the fire but were released after receiving primary medical treatment.

Officials from the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission rushed to the scene immediately after receiving reports of the incident and began gathering information about the dead and injured.

Officials of the mission are maintaining round-the-clock contact with hospitals and local police to provide necessary assistance to Bangladeshi nationals affected by the fire.

The Deputy High Commission has also opened a 24-hour helpline to provide assistance and information related to the incident.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka and the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata are maintaining close contact with the relevant Indian authorities over the situation.
