UN chief meets Khalilur Rahman ahead of UNGA 81 opening

UN Secretary-General António Guterres met Bangladesh Foreign Minister and President-elect of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Dr Khalilur Rahman in New York on Monday, a day before the new session opens.

The meeting at UN Headquarters focused on preparations for Khalilur Rahman to assume the presidency of the 81st session of the General Assembly.

United Nations in Bangladesh extended its warmest congratulations and best wishes to Khalilur Rahman as he prepared to take up the year-long global leadership role.

The 81st session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to open on September 8.

Khalilur Rahman’s presidency is being seen as a significant diplomatic achievement for Bangladesh.

As president of the General Assembly, he is expected to play an important role in steering discussions on international peace and security, sustainable development and other global challenges.

Khalilur Rahman will be the second Bangladeshi to serve as president of the UN General Assembly.
