While incidents of mob justice have decreased in and around Dhaka, they are still occurring in various parts of the country, stated Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
He made this comment at a press conference on Monday, August 18, following the 12th meeting of the law enforcement agencies at the Ministry of Home Affairs conference room in the Secretariat.
The meeting agenda included topics such as the recording of a case related to the July murder, the overall law and order situation across the country, measures against those inciting mobs, action against hijackers and extortionists, and the bail of top terrorists.
The Home Affairs Adviser also announced that 25,871 new personnel have been recruited into law enforcement agencies in preparation for the 13th general election.
He specified the breakdown: 15,851 in the police force, 4,469 in Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), 1,558 in the prison department, and 204 in the Fire Service and Civil Defence. He noted that these are all new appointments, with some positions being newly created and others being existing vacancies.
The police recruitments range from sub-inspectors to constables, while the BGB and Ansar also have new constables.
When asked about the arrest of the MyTV Chairman, despite the plaintiff stating there was no involvement, the adviser responded, "You should ask the court about this. If the police arrest is illegal, the court will release him. They are independent."
Addressing the journalists, Chowdhury said, "We want to ensure that ordinary or innocent people are not harassed in any way.
The guilty will not be spared under any circumstances. We always catch the small fry. The big fish always get away.
A big one has been caught, and now you are all focusing on it. But no one is saying anything about the small fry."
He concluded, "Therefore, if an innocent, ordinary person is arrested, you should speak up about it. Thank you for always telling the truth."
