The arrest of the mysterious figure Enayet Karim Chowdhury, known as the “Mystery Man,” has led to the revelation of numerous startling details. It has emerged that he had an extensive criminal network operating in Dhaka, with connections spanning from bureaucrats to high-ranking officials. One significant piece of information that came to light was his involvement in a deal worth 150 crore taka, where he allegedly arranged to protect a government secretary from a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
These revelations came during an interrogation by the Detective Police, following his arrest.
In a related development, Golam Mustafa Azad, a paid associate of the mysterious American national who claimed to be a CIA agent, was also arrested. He was taken into remand, where it was revealed that he and Enayet Karim had close ties with at least two additional Inspector Generals of Police (DIGs). Furthermore, the investigation disclosed that Enayet had made an arrangement to protect an influential secretary from an ACC case, with the deal involving a sum of at least 150 crore taka.
Details also surfaced about Enayet’s connections with numerous government officials, which were confirmed during remand interrogations. According to investigators, Enayet had deep ties with a prominent bureaucrat, who was involved in several ACC cases. Enayet allegedly worked out a deal with this bureaucrat to clear them of these cases, although no evidence of the financial transaction has been found yet.
Golam Mustafa Azad, Enayet’s associate, had previously worked as a GM in Operations at Ekattor TV. He resigned from his position voluntarily on August 5. Enayet had employed him as an assistant, paying him 2 lakh taka per month. Through Azad, Enayet transferred funds to various locations. Azad also resided in a house in Gulshan that was rented by Enayet, who reportedly paid a monthly rent of 2 lakh taka for the property.
Enayet was arrested on Saturday morning while acting suspiciously near Minto Road’s Minister’s area in the capital. He was taken into custody under the Special Powers Act, and following his arrest, he was placed on 48-hour remand. After the remand period, the court extended it by another five days. The remand request was filed by Inspector Akhtar Morshed of the RAB’s Rakhine Zone team. During this time, Enayet and Golam Mustafa Azad, who had also been arrested from the airport area, were both presented in court. Mustafa’s remand was also extended for five days.
Enayet’s lawyer, Omar Farooq Faruqi, argued in favor of the remand, stating that two iPhones had been seized from Enayet during his arrest. These phones contained crucial data revealing his involvement with foreign intelligence agencies. According to this data, Enayet had been working as an agent for a foreign intelligence service, allegedly involved in an attempt to form a new government in India. Enayet admitted during police interrogation that he had been working as an agent for a foreign organization, and that Golam Mustafa Azad had been his accomplice. They reportedly engaged in financial transactions through Mustafa and had connections with banned organizations.
Investigators have also indicated that Enayet was working with a mission to change the current government and establish a new national or caretaker government in Bangladesh. Enayet allegedly stayed at the Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on September 6 and 7. Later, he moved to a flat in Gulshan, where he held secret meetings with several senior officials from both government and non-government sectors, influential political leaders, and businessmen.
Enayet reportedly gathered and sent intelligence about the current political scenario in Bangladesh, including information on the positions of both governmental and opposition parties, to his controlling intelligence agency abroad.
