Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday (October 27) invited Japanese investors, businesses and financial institutions to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh and contribute to the country‍‍`s next phase of economic growth.

He made the call at a joint press announcement with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi following their bilateral summit at the Japanese Prime Minister‍‍`s Office, known as the Kantei, in Tokyo.

Tarique Rahman said Bangladesh and Japan had an opportunity to strengthen their longstanding partnership through greater trade, investment and economic cooperation.

He urged Japanese businesses to explore opportunities in Bangladesh, highlighting the potential for productive investment, technology transfer, skilled employment and mutually beneficial ventures.

The Prime Minister said the two leaders had discussed a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations.

The discussions covered cooperation in energy, information and communication technology (ICT), railways, infrastructure, deep-sea ports and foreign direct investment.

Tarique Rahman said Bangladesh was committed to working with Japanese partners to unlock its economic potential and create opportunities for both countries.

He also said Bangladesh and Japan had exchanged several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in key areas during the visit.

A joint statement would provide further details of the outcomes and priorities agreed during the talks, he added.

Recalling Japan‍‍`s longstanding contribution to Bangladesh‍‍`s development, Tarique Rahman thanked the Japanese government and people for their support in infrastructure development and socioeconomic progress.

Japan was among the first countries to recognise Bangladesh after independence, establishing diplomatic relations in February 1972.

The Prime Minister said his government wanted to build on that relationship by expanding economic cooperation and strengthening business ties.

Earlier, Takaichi welcomed Tarique Rahman at the Kantei, where he received a guard of honour before the two leaders held their summit.

Tarique Rahman arrived in Tokyo on Monday (October 26) for a four-day official visit at Takaichi‍‍`s invitation.

On the first day, he held separate meetings with former Japanese prime minister Taro Aso, Marubeni Corporation Chairman Masumi Kakinoki and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Akihiko Tanaka.

The visit is expected to strengthen economic engagement between the two countries, including cooperation on implementing the Bangladesh-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement signed in February 2026.
