Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi held bilateral talks in Tokyo on Tuesday (October 27), focusing on strengthening strategic ties, expanding trade and investment, and enhancing cooperation in key sectors.

The summit took place at the Japanese Prime Minister‍‍`s Office, known as the Kantei, following a ceremonial welcome for the Bangladesh premier.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations, economic cooperation, Japanese investment and regional and international issues of mutual interest.

They also explored opportunities for greater cooperation in energy, information and communication technology (ICT), infrastructure, railways, deep-sea ports and other sectors.

The discussions included efforts to advance the Bangladesh-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), signed in February 2026, and strengthen business engagement between the two countries.

At a joint press announcement following the meeting, Tarique Rahman invited Japanese investors, businesses and financial institutions to explore opportunities in Bangladesh and contribute to its next phase of economic growth.

He said Bangladesh was committed to working with Japanese partners to promote productive investment, technology transfer, skilled employment and mutually beneficial business ventures.

The Prime Minister also said the two countries had exchanged several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in key areas during the visit.

Earlier, Takaichi welcomed Tarique Rahman at the Kantei, where a contingent of Japan‍‍`s armed forces accorded him a guard of honour as the national anthems of both countries were played.

Tarique Rahman inspected the guard of honour before the two leaders introduced members of their respective delegations.

The Bangladesh premier also signed the visitors‍‍` book before proceeding to the summit.

The Bangladesh delegation included Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Prime Minister‍‍`s Finance and Planning Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit, and Adviser Rehan Asif Asad.

Tarique Rahman arrived in Japan on Monday (October 26) for a four-day official visit at Takaichi‍‍`s invitation.

On the first day of his visit, he held separate meetings with former Japanese prime minister Taro Aso, Marubeni Corporation Chairman Masumi Kakinoki and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Akihiko Tanaka.

The visit aims to deepen the existing Bangladesh-Japan strategic partnership and expand economic and development cooperation.
