8-party alliance warns indefinite sit-in at Jamuna by Nov 16

Eight-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami warned it would stage an open-ended sit-in outside the Chief Adviser’s official residence - Jamuna, if the interim government fails to meet five demands—including giving the July National Charter legal force—by November 16.

The ultimatum was issued by Jamaat’s Naib-e-Ameer, Professor Mujibur Rahman, at a joint press conference in Dhaka on Wednesday, following a meeting of senior leaders from the alliance.

The alliance has been pressing the interim administration of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus to formalise the July National Charter and hold a referendum on it ahead of national elections expected in early 2026.

Outlining near-term actions, the alliance said it would mobilise nationwide “anti-fascist” street presence on Thursday and stage district- and city-level protest marches on Friday to demand an executive order implementing the charter and a pre-election referendum.

Alliance leaders will meet again at 11:00 a.m. on 16 November, followed by a 12:30 pm press briefing at Al-Falah Auditorium, where they said they would announce an indefinite sit-in outside Jamuna if their demands remain unmet.

The warning comes days after the eight parties submitted a memorandum to the Chief Adviser calling for a five-point package centred on the charter—drafted after the 2024 July uprising—to be enacted without delay.

The memorandum was received at Jamuna by an adviser to the interim government, according to state media. Local outlets have also reported heightened restrictions on rallies near the compound under Dhaka Metropolitan Police orders.
