Police Seek 10-Day Remand for Former CECs Awal, Huda

News Desk

Police have requested a 10-day remand for former Chief Election Commissioners (CECs) Kazi Habibul Awal and K.M. Nurul Huda in a case filed on charges of sedition, fraud, and embezzlement of funds.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Shamsuzzoha Sarkar, the investigating officer of the case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka, submitted the application today, Thursday (June 26). SI Rafiqul Islam of the DMP‍‍`s Prosecution Division stated that a hearing on the matter will take place in the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Earlier, on June 23, the court granted a four-day remand for Nurul Huda. Subsequently, on Wednesday, Detective Police (DB) arrested Kazi Habibul Awal from Moghbazar in Dhaka.

The case was filed by the BNP on June 22. The complaint alleges that the three former CECs—Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, A.K.M. Nurul Huda, and Kazi Habibul Awal—failed to fulfill their constitutional duties during the 2014, 2018, and 2024 national elections held under the previous Awami League government. Instead, they allegedly intimidated voters, mass-arrested BNP activists, and "completed" elections without actual voting.

The lawsuit further claims that in these three elections, political opponents were kept away from the polls through "ghost cases, abductions, disappearances, and torture." It asserts that violating the constitution, breaching codes of conduct, and declaring candidates victorious without public votes are all punishable offenses.

Among the list of accused in the case are former Inspectors General of Police (IGPs) Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, A.K.M. Shahidul Haque, Javed Patwary, Benazir Ahmed, and current police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.

The plaintiffs claim that thousands of voters, law enforcement members, honest presiding and polling officers at various polling stations across the country are direct witnesses to these incidents. They also state that the truth can be uncovered by analyzing the seals and signatures on ballot papers.
