The mournful Tajia procession commemorating Holy Ashura began from the historic Hussaini Dalan Imambara in Dhaka on Sunday morning, as the Shia Muslim community observed the day in remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA).
The procession commenced at around 10 am, passing through Azimpur, Nilkhet, New Market, and Science Laboratory, before concluding at Dhanmondi Lake Karbala.
Participants, mostly dressed in black as a symbol of mourning, were seen carrying symbolic knives, banners, flags (Nishan), Besta, and Bailalam, reflecting the grief and reverence associated with the day.
Holy Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, marks the tragic martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The day is observed with processions and prayers by the Shia community worldwide.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have implemented stringent security measures across the procession route. Members of the police, RAB, army, SWAT, and fire service were deployed, with plainclothes officers from intelligence units also monitoring the area.
Traffic police were seen managing vehicular movement to ensure the safe and peaceful passage of the procession.
Holy Ashura is a solemn day for the entire Muslim Ummah, and the Shia community observes it annually with deep mourning and symbolic rituals in honor of Imam Hussain’s stand for truth and justice.
