The National Citizens` Party (NCP) is set to hold nationwide protest programs today, Thursday, July 17, in response to the alleged attacks on its leaders in Gopalganj.
NCP convenor Nahid Islam announced this decision at a press conference held at the Khulna Press Club on Wednesday night, July 16.
He stated that previously announced march programs would proceed as scheduled in various districts, including Faridpur. However, Thursday`s programs in Madaripur and Shariatpur have been postponed, with new dates to be announced later for these districts.
During the press conference, Nahid Islam alleged that the attacks in Gopalganj were premeditated. He claimed that the NCP`s march in Gopalganj was part of a month-long, pre-announced program, and despite informing the administration and ensuring security, Awami League and `Mujibwadi` supporters carried out the planned assault.
He further asserted that the NCP has broken all past records in Gopalganj, demonstrating that other political parties can also hold programs there outside of the Awami League.
Regarding the attacks, Nahid Islam stated, "We were attacked multiple times, both before and after the rally. This proves that the attack was premeditated."
He praised the role of law enforcement agencies, expressing gratitude for the cooperation received from the army and other relevant forces.
Nahid Islam demanded the arrest of those responsible for the Gopalganj attacks within the next 24 hours, stating, "The attackers must be brought to justice swiftly."
It`s worth noting that the NCP has accused Bangladesh Chhatra League and Awami League activists of attacking their march in Gopalganj. Following the incident, central NCP leaders arrived in Khulna on Wednesday evening.
