Bangladesh seeks consular access to Hadi case suspects

News Desk

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed said Bangladesh has sought consular access to meet two men detained in India as suspects in the killing of Inkilab Mancha convener Shaheed Sharif Osman Bin Hadi.

She made the remarks to reporters at the foreign ministry on Monday (March 9).

Shama Obaed said Bangladesh learned on Sunday that police in Kolkata had detained Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain as suspects in the case. She said they were reportedly placed on 14-day remand.

She said the Bangladesh deputy high commission in Kolkata has been in contact with the authorities and a request for consular access has been made.

She said Bangladesh does not yet have sufficient information and will wait for full details before proceeding further.

Shama Obaed said Bangladesh has a prisoner transfer agreement with India, and said there is broad demand for justice in the case if the suspects are identified.

Asked how quickly the suspects could be brought back, she said it was too early to say, noting it is a matter for another country’s court.

She said Bangladesh is pursuing consular access through diplomatic channels and will take next steps after confirming identities and verifying the information.

She said no reply has yet been received to the request, and Bangladesh is waiting for a response.
