Trump reviews Iran plan as UN urges Hormuz reopening

International Desk

US President Donald Trump’s national security team is reviewing an Iranian peace plan aimed at halting the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, while postponing talks on Tehran’s nuclear programme.

The proposal comes as diplomatic efforts continue to end the conflict and ease a standoff in the strategic waterway, a key route for global energy supplies.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg as Tehran sought diplomatic support. Araghchi said Iran was considering a US request to restart negotiations.

Dozens of nations have called for the “urgent and unimpeded reopening” of the Strait of Hormuz. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the US-Iran standoff in the waterway risked triggering a global food emergency.

Israel and Hezbollah, meanwhile, continued to exchange fire despite a ceasefire. The death toll from Israeli attacks on Lebanon since the April 17 “ceasefire” has risen to at least 40 people.
