Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. A. M. Nasir Uddin announced that intensive preparations are underway for the election, which is planned to be held before Ramadan next February. He warned that if any polling center is occupied, the votes for that entire center will be canceled.
He made the statement on Saturday (August 23) in Rajshahi during an exchange of views with election officials from the Rajshahi region regarding the 13th national parliamentary election.
Nasir Uddin stated, "We do not want to get into the political debate over whether the election will be held or not. We want to move forward in accordance with the Chief Adviser`s directives." He added that election preparations have been intensified since receiving the Chief Adviser`s letter. He emphasized, "There is no plan to appoint any District Commissioners or Police Superintendents who were previously involved in such activities. Those who dream of occupying ballot boxes will have their dreams shattered. Forget the history of occupying polling centers."
Regarding the Proportional Representation (PR) system, Nasir Uddin said, "The Constitution does not have this type of electoral system. We cannot go beyond it. Although there is an ongoing debate among political parties on this, I do not want to get involved."
He further added, "The Awami League cannot participate in the election while the legal proceedings are ongoing. Let`s see what the verdict is."
