Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Bangladesh’s former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, paying tribute to her political legacy and her role in relations between the two neighbouring countries.
In a condolence message posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account today, Modi said he was “deeply saddened” to learn of Khaleda Zia’s passing in Dhaka.
He extended his “sincerest condolences” to her family and to the people of Bangladesh, and prayed for strength for her loved ones as they cope with the loss.
Reflecting on her place in Bangladesh’s history, Modi noted that, as the country’s first woman prime minister, Khaleda Zia made “important contributions towards the development of Bangladesh”, which he said would always be remembered.
The Indian premier also recalled his meeting with Khaleda Zia during his visit to Dhaka in 2015, describing the encounter as a warm interaction.
He said he hoped her vision and political legacy would continue to guide and shape India–Bangladesh relations in the future.
Concluding his message, Modi offered a prayer for eternal peace for the late leader, saying, “May her soul rest in peace.”
