325 polling centres lack electricity; EC seeks urgent fix

Electricity connections were still unavailable at 325 polling centres across Bangladesh ahead of the referendum and the 13th national parliament election scheduled for February 12, the Election Commission (EC) has said.

In a letter sent on Sunday to the Power Division’s senior secretary, the EC asked the authorities to ensure power supply at the affected centres before polling day, stressing that uninterrupted electricity is essential for the smooth conduct of voting.

The commission said polling centres have already been finalised, but the 325 locations remain without connections and require urgent arrangements.

A total of 42,761 polling centres have been set across the country for the upcoming referendum and parliamentary election.

Election officials said electricity is needed at polling stations to run lighting, electronic equipment and other logistical arrangements during voting and counting.
