Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today urged all political parties and citizens to avoid creating new divisions over the issues of referendum and proportional representation (PR), instead uniting to ensure a quick and credible national election.
“Let’s hold the election quickly to save the people,” he said while exchanging views with residents of Goreya Union Parishad under his Thakurgaon-1 constituency.
Fakhrul called on all parties to cooperate in holding the upcoming polls, saying, “Everyone wants to cast their votes. Let’s form an elected parliament where these issues can be discussed.”
He criticized those staging movements over the referendum and PR issues, alleging that “their intention is not good” and that they aim to “foil the election.”
Reaffirming BNP’s commitment to create one crore new jobs, the senior leader said the party’s politics stands against revenge and division. “We don’t want divisions among Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians. We want harmony and unity,” he said.
Fakhrul also highlighted the importance of national reforms, referring to the July Charter, which he said will be signed by parties that agree with its contents. “The July Charter is like installing a metal sheet to strengthen a house — our politics needs similar reform,” he added.
He has been touring his constituency since Tuesday to mobilize support for BNP’s Sheaf of Paddy symbol ahead of the upcoming general election.
Thakurgaon district BNP General Secretary Poigam Ali, Sadar Upazila BNP General Secretary Mahbub Hossain Tuhin, and hundreds of local leaders and activists attended the event.
