Next election must be held based on July Charter: Nahid

News Desk

Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), said that the upcoming election must be held on the basis of the July Charter.

Speaking at a press conference at the NCP’s central office in Dhaka’s Banglamotor today, he stated, “The July Charter requires a legal basis. We will not entrust this reform process to an elected parliament. Instead, the next parliament or a constituent assembly will be formed based on the July Charter, and its implementation must occur during this interim government’s term.”

Nahid announced that the NCP will hold a rally at the Shaheed Minar at 4:00 pm on August 3, where the manifesto for a “New Bangladesh” will be presented.

He expressed regret for potential disruptions, saying, “HSC exams are scheduled on Sunday morning and afternoon, and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal also has an event. This may cause traffic congestion in Dhaka. We sincerely apologise to residents and students. However, as August is a historic month, we must hold our programme on this day.”

He confirmed that the NCP’s “July March” will conclude with Sunday’s rally.

“At the Shaheed Minar, we will conclude the July March and unveil our vision and action plans for a New Bangladesh, including the NCP’s roadmap and future programmes,” Nahid said.

He added that the rally will reiterate demands for the July Charter, justice, reforms, and a new constitution, urging the government to resolve the charter’s status by August 5 and enact it.

Reflecting on the July March, Nahid said, “On the first anniversary of the July mass uprising, we conducted the July March across 59 districts, engaging with people, meeting families of martyrs, the injured, and protesting students, and connecting with the masses.”
