Fazlur Rahman Must Offer Unconditional Apology for Remarks on DU Students — DUCSU

Staff Reporter

The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) has strongly condemned and protested the recent remarks made by Advocate Fazlur Rahman, an advisor to the BNP Chairperson, regarding Dhaka University students. DUCSU leaders have also called on him to offer an unconditional apology to the students.

The protest was issued in a statement signed by DUCSU General Secretary SM Forhad on Sunday night (September 21).

According to the statement, following the DUCSU elections, senior BNP figures used derogatory and hateful terms to describe Dhaka University students, calling them “sold-out minds,” “followers of trends,” “servants,” and “backward.” Fazlur Rahman also likened Dhaka University to the Hathazari Madrasa, a comparison DUCSU strongly rejected.

DUCSU stated that such comments reflect Fazlur Rahman’s deep contempt and racially divisive attitude towards the students. In post-2024 Bangladesh, such hateful rhetoric stands in direct contradiction to the aspirations of the July uprising.

The statement emphasized that Dhaka University is a secular institution, a hub of free thought, and a cradle of the country’s democratic movements. It has proudly upheld a multicultural legacy for over a century by ensuring equal dignity and rights for all students, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or ideology.

DUCSU declared that Fazlur Rahman’s hateful and racially charged comments, aimed at achieving political interests, not only insult students but also dishonor the university’s glorious history, heritage, and legacy of struggle.

The statement further said such disrespectful remarks are completely unacceptable, and demanded that Advocate Fazlur Rahman issue an unconditional apology to the students for his irresponsible and offensive comments.

DUCSU also urged him to refrain from making such divisive and hateful statements in the future. They reaffirmed their firm stance against any offensive or racially motivated remarks to uphold the dignity of the university and its students.
