“India is moving forward with a spirit of global brotherhood. Today, India has no major external enemies. But to be honest, our biggest enemy is our dependency on other countries. Over-reliance on foreign powers will lead us toward a major defeat,” said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He made these remarks on Saturday at an event titled “Prosperity Through the Sea.”
Modi emphasized that the future of 1.4 billion Indians cannot be left in the hands of foreign powers. National development is not possible through foreign dependence, as it undermines national self-respect.
He asserted that India cannot progress without self-reliance and must develop everything using its own technology—from basic microchips to large ships.
“All of India’s problems have one solution—self-reliance,” he said. “As the world’s most populous country, India must be self-sufficient to ensure global peace, stability, and prosperity.”
Criticizing the Congress party, Modi blamed the decades-long “License Raj” after independence for suppressing young talent and preventing the country from realizing its true potential.
Giving an example from India’s shipping sector, he pointed out that 50 years ago, Indian-made ships from coastal states handled 40% of the country’s imports and exports. That figure has now dropped to just 5%.
Modi added that significant reforms are underway in India’s maritime sector. Initiatives like “One Nation, One Document” and “One Nation, One Port” will streamline trade and commerce. Nearly ₹70,000 crore (around $8.4 billion USD) is expected to be invested in the sector in the coming days.
