citizens to stop using foreign products and embrace locally made goods.

He made the call during a speech to the nation on Sunday, according to a report by AFP.

The announcement of Modi’s address came unexpectedly on Sunday evening amid escalating trade tensions with the United States.

Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian imports, Modi has been encouraging citizens to adopt a ‘Swadeshi’ (self-reliant) approach by increasing the use of domestic products.

Members and supporters of Modi’s party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have already begun calling for a boycott of popular U.S.-based brands such as McDonald’s, Pepsi, and Apple.
In his speech, Modi said:
“Many of the products we use daily are foreign-made — often without us even realizing it. We need to free ourselves from these. We must choose products that are made in India.”

However, while he emphasized the rejection of foreign goods, Modi did not mention any specific country by name in his speech.
